Its compressor pours 41°F straight to the glass, in the same league as the R1's cold setting. The A2 you saw in this bracket last year couldn't do that. The A1 can — so cold, for once, is a tie.
Then comes the price tag game. The page advertises $509 — but the cart says $649 unless you apply a discount code at checkout. That's the third machine in this test where the "sale" price depends on a permanent coupon. Either way it lands in the same bracket as the R1, so the comparison comes down to what you get for the money.
And then it gives back the tie everywhere else. Hot water stops at 203°F — 9 degrees short of a boil, same ceiling as its cheaper sibling. And the ownership cost is the worst in the test: two filters on two different schedules, $129.97 a year — that number comes straight from Waterdrop's own comparison table. Against one cartridge every 18 months on the R1, the A1 costs roughly twice as much to keep running, every year, forever.
The certification line reads "NSF/ANSI 372 Certified" — lead-free materials, not contaminant removal — and the contaminant list carries the "data from third-party laboratories" asterisk. By now you know the pattern. It also runs a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio where the R1 publishes 3:1: more water down the drain for every glass you drink.
Who it's for: Waterdrop-brand loyalists who rarely boil water, don't mind a permanent coupon dance, and are willing to pay the highest filter bill in the test to match — not beat — the R1's cold pour.
The iSpring is the strangest result in my test, and I say that as someone who went in expecting to like it. iSpring is a real filtration company — I can pull up its under-sink systems in the public NSF database right now, fourteen listings deep. That's exactly the paper trail I spent this whole article asking for.
So explain this: a $629.99 machine — one of the two most expensive in my test — declares no certification at all. Not on the product page. Not in the manual. I read both twice. I wanted to rank the Bluevua higher. It's the only machine in the test that ships with a glass carafe — 60 oz of borosilicate instead of another plastic jug — and it remineralizes by default, so the water tastes finished instead of flat. Those are the right instincts, and no one else here has both.
But this is also the machine where I learned to double-check badges. The product page says "NSF & WQA Certified" a few lines above "removes 99.9% of contaminants." So I did what this article exists to do: I opened the certificate Bluevua itself links to. It's for standard 372 — lead-free construction materials. Then I searched the WQA performance listing: the models that appear are others in the Bluevua range. The exact model on this page, the one the badge is selling, isn't there. That gap — a true badge placed next to a performance claim it doesn't cover — is the pattern that reshaped this entire ranking, and Bluevua is where I first saw it clearly.
The filter story has the same fine print. "12-24 months" sounds like one relaxed schedule; the manual prices it as per-stage lifespans with an annual replacement set at $89.97. And there's no temperature system to soften any of this: no hot, no cold, on any machine the brand makes. It filters, into a genuinely nice carafe, at room temperature, full stop.
Who it's for: Buyers who specifically want a glass carafe on their counter, drink all their water at room temperature (no hot, no cold — and Bluevua doesn't build hot or cold in any model), and read the fine print on filter costs first. That's a small overlap: most people who go looking for a real RO countertop want their morning tea and their cold glass out of the same machine.
